Artist Info:
Although born in Germany, Johnny Friedlaender (1912-1989) lived most of his life in Paris. Living briefly in Czechoslovakia and the Hague before settling in Paris, he spent World War II in Marseilles working with the French Resistance. Animals and human figures were his main subjects until the mid-1950s when they gave way to more elegant, abstract color compositions with delicate forms and symbols. Later works suggest musical modes of organization in their tonality, rhythmic structures and harmony of colors, often musical or organic in nature. He was considered a master etcher and maintained a studio in Paris where he taught his skills to other artists.
